In the 1940s, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) developed the concept of the 4-Cs so that gemologists and others in the diamond business would have common ground in describing and determining the value of a diamond. It essentially standardized the way to evaluate a diamond and place a value on it. This is the system that is still universally accepted and used today. The 4Cs are qualites that determine the value of your diamond.  They are Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat Weight. However there are other factors besides the 4Cs to consider when buying a diamond.
